Source / Reference Imagery and Inspiration

When designing a game, once I have the initial ideas sketched out my next step is to start a list of assets needed for the game (where assets are the ‘stuff’ needed – buildings, furniture, characters, vehicles, terrain, skyboxes, etc). I start sketching out scene, character, and object designs, and where applicable I look for source or reference imagery to guide me.

Inspiration sheet for designing Virtual Hawai'iWhen working on Virtual Hawai’i, for instance, I collected perhaps 30-40 pictures of various things I would need to design. When working on the flora of the scene I used reference pictures of Koa trees and Olona and fern forests. I would constantly refer to this imagery as I designed, making sure that I matched not only the shape and color of the plants but also things like the density of the forest and look of the soil. Beyond plants, I had pictures of waterfalls, cliffsides, beaches, buildings, etc. On the right is a page I used for reference on cliffs – click for a larger version.

As part of the Monday Inspiration series I occasionally post reference imagery along a particular theme, be it ‘magical lair’ or ‘futuristic military base.’ I hope that these will be useful to other designers looking for ideas for their own games. Check out the pages below for some inspiration.
